Violence in the workplcae is a significant health and safety issue. Homicide is the third-leading cause of fatal occupational injury in the U.S. The Bureau of Labor Statistics Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI), there were exactly 639 workplace homicides in 2001 in the US, out of a total of 8,786 fatal work injuries.
The National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), about 2 million assaults and threats of violence against employees happen annually in the workplace. Assault is the most common type of workplace violence ageraging about 1.5 million a year.
